Air Brake System: A type of friction brake for vehicles in which compressed air pressing on a piston is used to apply the pressure to the brake pad or brake shoe needed to stop the vehicle. Air brakes are used in large heavy vehicles, particularly those having multiple trailers which must be linked into the brake system, such as trucks, buses, trailers, and semi-trailers. George Westinghouse first developed air brakes for use in railway service.
Air leaks are one of the most common state inspection failure items. A faulty air brake system can cause an accident on the road. More than 50% of all out-of-service cases are brake-related.
We had this trailer come in for 2 issues.
1st issue: Air leak on the front axle that was raised. It had two 90 degree air fittings that went to air bags that were leaking air.
2nd issue: The abs system was malfunctioning, the light was on.
The abs light stays on till the problem is repaired. ABS light is located on the driver side rear. One of the most common issues is a sensor that is misaligned with the tone ring. This can be repaired by cleaning and pushing the sensor inward against the tone ring on the wheel. An ABS light on will not cause a failed inspection but can affect your CSA score and carries a level 4.
